Aceh Tsunami Museum

The Aceh Tsunami Museum in Banda Aceh was built to commemorate the devastating 2004 earthquake and tsunami. Designed by Ridwan Kamil, the structure combines a traditional Acehnese stilt house layout with an emergency escape hill. Upon entering, visitors pass through a narrow, dark, and damp corridor with running water on both sides, evoking the emotional panic of the disaster. Inside, there are memorial rooms, photographic archives, and an earthquake simulator. The museum serves not only as a visual memorial but also as an educational hub for disaster mitigation and international disaster research. The building is engineered with reinforced concrete to act as an evacuation zone if a similar disaster occurs. Every day, hundreds of domestic and international tourists visit the museum to witness the resilience of the Acehnese people. Its strategic location in central Banda Aceh places it close to Blang Padang Field and the Baiturrahman Grand Mosque.

Baiturrahman Grand Mosque

Baiturrahman Grand Mosque is the spiritual and cultural heart of Aceh, located in the center of Banda Aceh. Built during the Aceh Sultanate, it has witnessed historical events, including being burned by the Dutch and miraculously surviving the 2004 tsunami. The mosque's architecture is grand, blending Mughal Indian styles with classical Islamic design. It features seven large black domes, eight tall minarets, and a vast courtyard adorned with massive electric umbrellas reminiscent of the Prophet's Mosque in Medina. As a historic center of Islamic learning in Southeast Asia, the mosque stands as a symbol of pride for the Acehnese. Gunongan is a historic monument shaped like a mini mountain located in central Banda Aceh. It was built in the 17th century by Sultan Iskandar Muda as a symbol of love for his queen, Putri Pahang from Malaysia. According to historical records, the queen frequently missed the hilly terrain of her homeland. To comfort her, the Sultan constructed Gunongan out of white limestone so the princess could climb and play at its peak. The architecture of Gunongan is unique, featuring solid white octagonal walls shaped like tiered flower petals. Nearby stands Pinto Khop, a small domed gateway used by the queen to rest after bathing in the royal river. Today, Gunongan is preserved as a cultural heritage site surrounded by manicured green lawns. Its quiet environment makes it a comfortable historical educational site in the middle of the city.

PLTD Apung is a massive 2,600-ton floating power generator barge stranded in the middle of a residential area in Punge Blang Cut, Banda Aceh. The vessel was dragged 5 kilometers inland from the sea by the devastating 2004 tsunami. This giant steel vessel sitting in a residential neighborhood stands as visual proof of the tsunami's power. Today, it has been turned into a professionally managed memorial museum. Visitors can climb onto the deck to enjoy panoramic views of Banda Aceh and inspect the massive generator machinery inside. A memorial garden surrounding the ship features a wall engraved with names of victims. Near the entrance, there is a tourist information center, local guides, restrooms, and souvenir shops. It is located close to the city center and is easily accessible via the Trans Koetaradja bus.

Branching staghorn corals thrive in these clear, shallow waters. Visitors can walk around the island to explore the ruins of Indonesia's oldest hajj quarantine facility built during the Dutch colonial era. The hill air is cold and often blanketed by thick fog, resembling a land above the clouds. A concrete viewing balcony with safety railings has been built at the summit for photos. Cozy cafes serving hot Gayo coffee are available for visitors to warm up while taking in the high-altitude landscape. The road leading to Pantan Terong is paved but very steep, requiring a well-conditioned vehicle. Along the ascent, travelers pass through fertile vegetable farms and pine forests.

The Samudera Pasai Islamic Monument in North Aceh was built to honor the historical glory of the Samudera Pasai Sultanate, the first Islamic kingdom in Southeast Asia. The monument features a tall tower topped with a large golden dome. Inside, a historical museum houses artifacts from the Pasai kingdom, including gold dirham coins, ancient tombstones with Arabic calligraphy, and replicas of medieval trading ships. A legendary culinary treat at Ujong Blang Beach is Rujak Ujong Blang, a fresh fruit salad dressed in a spicy peanut sauce mixed with grated local rumbia fruit. Enjoying this salad by the sea is a must-do activity.
