Taman Sari Gunongan
Gunongan is a historic monument shaped like a mini mountain located in central Banda Aceh. It was built in the 17th century by Sultan Iskandar Muda as a symbol of love for his queen, Putri Pahang from Malaysia.
According to historical records, the queen frequently missed the hilly terrain of her homeland. To comfort her, the Sultan constructed Gunongan out of white limestone so the princess could climb and play at its peak.
The architecture of Gunongan is unique, featuring solid white octagonal walls shaped like tiered flower petals. Nearby stands Pinto Khop, a small domed gateway used by the queen to rest after bathing in the royal river.
Today, Gunongan is preserved as a cultural heritage site surrounded by manicured green lawns. Its quiet environment makes it a comfortable historical educational site in the middle of the city.
