On December 26, 2004, a massive undersea earthquake of 9.1–9.3 Mw triggered a 30-meter-high tsunami sweeping the coast of Aceh at 800 km/h, claiming over 170,000 lives in Aceh alone.
This apocalyptic disaster triggered the largest international humanitarian response in modern history. The Rehabilitation and Reconstruction Agency (BRR) managed over 7 billion USD in aid. Ultimately, the tragedy served as a catalyst for peace between the Indonesian Government and GAM.
