Admiral Keumalahayati (Malahayati) was born into a military noble family of the Aceh Sultanate and educated at the Ma'had Baitul Maqdis Military Academy. She formed a special naval fleet consisting of widows of fallen Acehnese soldiers, known as the Inong Balee forces.
The peak of her heroism came on September 11, 1599, when she led her fleet to block armed Dutch merchant ships led by Cornelis de Houtman. In a one-on-one duel on the ship's deck, Malahayati killed Cornelis de Houtman with a rencong. Her military reputation prompted Queen Elizabeth I of England to send a diplomatic mission for peaceful trade.
