The Aceh War broke out on March 26, 1873, marked by the first Dutch military aggression under General Kohler, who was shot dead by Acehnese guerrilla fighters in the yard of the Baiturrahman Grand Mosque, forcing a Dutch retreat.
The Dutch returned with a second aggression under General van Swieten and captured the sultan's palace, but the war was far from over. Ulama and chiefs moved their bases inland for a guerrilla war, ideologically fueled by the recital of the epic Hikayat Prang Sabi manuscript. This resistance drained the Dutch treasury for over four decades.
