First built during the golden era of the Aceh Sultanate (estimated in 1612 AD under Sultan Iskandar Muda). The mosque served as a place of worship, a military fortress, and an international center for theological studies.
During the first Dutch military aggression in 1873, the mosque complex was burned by the Dutch, sparking Acehnese rage that led to the death of General Kohler. The Dutch rebuilt it in 1879 in an eclectic Indo-Saracenic style. During the 2004 tsunami, it stood firm without major structural damage, saving thousands of lives.
