The Cakra Donya Bell is one of the most historically significant artifacts kept at the Aceh State Museum in Banda Aceh. Standing 125 centimeters high and weighing hundreds of kilograms, this massive bronze bell is a testament to the diplomatic and trade ties between the Samudra Pasai Sultanate and the Chinese Ming Dynasty during the medieval period.
Historical records state that the bell was manufactured in China and brought to Sumatra in 1414 AD by Admiral Cheng Ho (Zheng He), the legendary commander of the Ming Dynasty's treasure fleet. The bell was officially presented to the Sultan of Samudra Pasai as a 'gift of friendship' from Emperor Yongle to secure a maritime trade alliance in the Strait of Malacca.
The name 'Cakra Donya' translates to 'The Wheel of the World.' The exterior of the bell is adorned with floral relief carvings, Chinese characters, and Arabic scripts. When Samudra Pasai was unified under the Sultanate of Aceh Darussalam in the early 16th century, Sultan Ali Mughayat Syah moved the bell to the palace in Banda Aceh, where it was placed on the flagship of the Acehnese navy to serve as a war alarm during battles against the Portuguese.
