The deepwater gas discovery in the South Andaman block in late 2023 by Mubadala Energy repositioned Aceh in the global energy market. The Layaran-1 well alone is estimated to hold 6 TCF of gas.
With the subsequent Tangkulo-1 discovery in 2024, the total potential rose to 8 TCF. Managed under the UUPA framework with significant regional profit sharing, commercial production is targeted for 2028.
