Between 1989 and 1998, the New Order regime declared DOM status in Aceh to suppress the GAM armed insurgency. This closed operation led to widespread human rights violations against innocent civilians.
Thousands of victims suffered arbitrary violence in detention facilities such as Rumoh Geudong. The DOM status was officially lifted by President B.J. Habibie in August 1998, alongside a formal state apology for the tragedy.
