Marco Polo landed in East Aceh in 1292 AD while escorting a Chinese princess to Persia. He recorded in his travelogue that many urban residents in Ferlec (Peureulak) had embraced Islam.
Half a century later, in 1345 AD, Ibn Battuta visited Samudra Pasai. He was fascinated by the beauty of the port city protected by sturdy wooden fortresses, the palace etiquette, and the piety of Sultan Malik az-Zahir.
