Sultanah Tajul Alam Safiatuddin Syah ascended the throne after her husband's demise, supported by a ruling from scholar Nuruddin ar-Raniri. Her 35-year reign shifted Aceh from military expansion to domestic peace.
She patronized scholarship, commissioning Abdurrauf As-Singkili to write the comprehensive civil law book Mir'at al-Thullab. Safiatuddin was highly skilled in negotiating with the Dutch VOC, protecting the sovereignty of Aceh's free port.
