The Samudra Pasai Sultanate was founded by Meurah Silu, who took the title Sultan Malikussaleh after converting to Islam. It was the first Sharia-based sovereign state in Southeast Asia, acting as a propagation center.
Pasai introduced gold Dirham coins for international trade in pepper and silk. In 1345 AD, world traveler Ibn Battuta visited and praised Pasai's beauty and the religious devotion of the sultan. The kingdom merged into the Aceh Sultanate in 1524 AD after being liberated from Portuguese occupation.
