The Lamuri Kingdom (Lan-wu-li in Tang Dynasty chronicles) was initially Hindu-Buddhist, evidenced by the ruins of the Indra Patra Fortress in Ladong. By the second half of the 13th century, Arab scholars converted the kingdom to Islam.
The discovery of Sultan Sulaiman bin Abdullah's gravestone (dated 1211 AD) in Lamreh proves Islamic sovereignty predating Samudra Pasai. Under Portuguese threat in the early 16th century, Lamuri merged into the unified Aceh Sultanate under Sultan Ali Mughayat Syah.
