Aceh Province possesses abundant geothermal renewable energy resources, a geographical consequence of its location along Sumatra's tectonic Ring of Fire. According to data from the National Geological Agency, Aceh's geothermal reserves are estimated to exceed 800 Megawatts (MW), distributed across over a dozen geothermal manifestations. Two national strategic geothermal projects currently being developed are located in the Mount Seulawah Agam area in Aceh Besar and the Jaboi area on Weh Island, Sabang.
The development of Geothermal Power Plants (PLTP) is a crucial commitment to Aceh's clean energy transition, reducing reliance on carbon-intensive coal and diesel power. The geothermal steam reserves at Seulawah Agam are estimated to generate tens of megawatts of eco-friendly electricity, independently securing the reliability of the Northern Sumatra power grid.
Geothermal projects require high technology and massive, long-term financing. With environmentally sound management and careful planning, the utilization of geothermal energy will not jeopardize the surrounding protected forests. Instead, it will serve as a reliable source of sustainable energy prosperity for clean industrial development in Aceh.
