The Arun Lhokseumawe Special Economic Zone (SEZ) is a national strategic industrial infrastructure mega-project established to accelerate economic growth on the east coast of Aceh. Officially designated under Government Regulation No. 5 of 2017, this industrial zone utilizes the former PT Arun NGL liquefied natural gas refinery facility spanning 2,622 hectares, boasting world-class integrated energy infrastructure. The Arun SEZ focuses on developing the energy sector (oil, gas, and power), petrochemicals, maritime logistics, and eco-friendly manufacturing processing (*green industry*).
The primary competitive edge of the Arun SEZ is its highly strategic geographical location, situated directly along the world's busiest shipping lane, the Strait of Malacca. The existing infrastructure in the zone is highly comprehensive, featuring a deep-sea port equipped with cargo and LNG docks, giant energy storage tanks, natural gas distribution pipelines, and a high-capacity power plant. This minimizes initial capital expenditure for global investors wishing to build petrochemical factories, transshipment logistics hubs, or export processing industries.
Through the acceleration of investment in the Arun Lhokseumawe SEZ, the government targets the creation of productive new jobs for tens of thousands of local residents and triggers a multiplier effect for the growth of local micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs). The zone is designed as a new economic growth center and the principal driver of sustainable modern industrialization at the northern gateway of Sumatra.
