Aceh Patchouli Oil, extracted from the distillation of Pogostemon cablin Benth leaves, is one of the most valuable essential oils in the global commodity market. Historically and empirically, Indonesia supplies approximately 90% of the world's patchouli oil demand, and about 70% of that export contribution originates from the fertile soils of Aceh. The southwest coastal areas of Aceh, such as South Aceh, Aceh Jaya (Calang), and Tapaktuan, are globally recognized as producing the most superior quality patchouli oil.
The key factor distinguishing Aceh Patchouli Oil from oils produced elsewhere is its exceptionally high concentration of the active compound Patchouli Alcohol (PA), which consistently ranges above 30% to 34%. In recent years, the Acehnese patchouli industry has experienced rapid downstream economic acceleration due to the active role of the Atsiri Research Center (ARC) at Universitas Syiah Kuala (USK) in Banda Aceh. Through applied research, ARC succeeded in stabilizing raw material prices for local farmers, training them in modern distillation techniques, and creating high-value derivative products such as antiseptic soaps, disinfectants, aromatherapy oils, and premium local perfumes, significantly boosting the rural economy.
