From a macroeconomics and international trade perspective, Gayo Arabica Coffee is a mainstay export commodity positioning Aceh Province on the global premium commodities map. Cultivated across fertile volcanic spans exceeding 100,000 hectares in Central Aceh, Bener Meriah, and Gayo Lues at optimal elevations of 1,200 to 1,700 meters, this region stands as one of the largest and best Arabica producers in Southeast Asia.
The global competitive edge of Gayo Coffee is anchored in local farmers' traditional organic farming methods passed down through generations. This has successfully enabled Gayo Coffee to secure world-class international sustainability certifications, including Fairtrade, USDA Organic, EU Organic, Rainforest Alliance, and an official Geographical Indication (GI) protection certificate. Consequently, tens of thousands of tons of green coffee beans are exported annually to markets in the United States, the European Union, and Japan to supply global premium coffee chains, including Starbucks.
This coffee industry acts as the principal driver of the regional economy, sustaining hundreds of thousands of farming households and stimulating growth in agro-tourism, logistics, and creative coffee-based industries in the Gayo highlands.
