Mount Geurutee Summit, situated on the border of Aceh Besar and Aceh Jaya, is a mountain pass along the western coast of Sumatra that offers the most dramatic natural scenery in Aceh. The highway here is carved directly out of limestone cliffs towering hundreds of meters above the crashing waves of the vast Indian Ocean.
Along the curves of the Geurutee pass, traditional wooden stilt shops cling to the cliff edges. Tourists stop here to rest and admire the blue horizon, uninhabited islands like Pulau Raya and Pulau Kluet, and white sand crescent bays below. Another unique draw is the presence of wild black Siamang gibbons that swing down to tree branches near the shops to ask for fruit from travelers.
On the culinary front, Geurutee's main highlight is Kopi Khop, robusta coffee served upside down on a small saucer with a straw. To drink it, you blow gently through the straw to let the coffee seep onto the saucer, then sip it. This presentation was created by West Coast fishermen to keep coffee warm and prevent sea breeze and sand from getting inside.
