The Aceh Tsunami Museum, located in the heart of Banda Aceh, is not just a building displaying history, but a monument of memory, a space for reflection, and a disaster education center. Inaugurated in 2009, the museum was designed by Ridwan Kamil during his career as an architect. The museum's exterior structure is inspired by a combination of a rescue boat, the dynamic traditional Saman dance, and the traditional elevated *Rumoh Aceh* stilt house concept designed to minimize the impact of floods or waves.
A visitor's emotional journey begins with the very first steps. Guests pass through the *Space of Fear* (Tsunami Passage), a narrow, 30-meter dark corridor with 20-meter water walls cascading on both sides, recreating the panic and chaos of the tsunami on December 26, 2004. The next steps lead to the *Space of Sorrow* (Memorial Well), a high, dimly lit cylindrical chamber where thousands of victims' names are engraved on the circular walls under the word "Allah" at the peak. Finally, visitors cross the *Space of Confusion* (Bridge of Hope), leading them out of the darkness into a bright exhibition area, symbolizing the resilience and rebirth of the Acehnese people.
On the upper floors, the museum features interactive educational exhibitions. It offers earthquake and tsunami simulators, historical dioramas, a documentary screening room, and archives documenting the largest international humanitarian response in history. The museum serves as an essential reminder for future generations of nature's formidable power and the strength of the human spirit to rise from destruction.
