Gunongan: Love Garden of the Pahang Princess in Banda Aceh

Gunongan (Taman Sari Gunongan) is a highly valuable cultural heritage site in the heart of Banda Aceh, preserving a monument of love from the 17th century. This 9.5-meter-tall white-painted limestone structure was built by Sultan Iskandar Muda (reigned 1607–1636), the greatest ruler of the Aceh Darussalam Sultanate, as a dedicated gift of love to his queen, Putroe Phang (Princess Kamaliya of the Pahang Kingdom, Malaysia). The princess, married after a military campaign, often missed her hilly homeland of Pahang, prompting the Sultan to build Gunongan to resemble a mini mountain range to comfort her.

The architecture of Gunongan is unique, featuring a circular, tiered castle form with carved petals resembling limestone hills. Near Gunongan stands a carved stone dais (*Peterana*) where the queen relaxed, and an artificial canal flowing toward *Pinto Khop* (The Dome Gate), a beautifully carved entrance connecting the sultan's palace (*Dalam*) with the queen's playground. In this garden complex, the queen would play with her palace maids and bathe in the Krueng Daroy river stream.

Gunongan is one of the few physical remains of the Aceh Sultanate's Darud Donya Palace complex that survived the burning by Dutch colonial forces during the Aceh War in 1873. Today, this historical site is preserved as a significant cultural heritage monument, symbolizing historical romance and the architectural grandeur of 17th-century Aceh.
