Mie Caluk is one of the most legendary and popular street foods throughout Aceh, particularly famous in the Pidie and Pidie Jaya regencies. It is often referred to by tourists as the 'traditional spaghetti of Aceh' due to its thick, long, and chewy texture resembling Italian pasta, served with a generous pour of rich local sauce.
The name 'Caluk' comes from the Acehnese language, which means 'to scoop or take quickly using a large spoon or hands.' The preparation of Mie Caluk is indeed fast and simple; vendors scoop the cooked yellow noodles from a large container, place them on a fresh banana leaf, and then pour a savory, spicy peanut sauce or a thick, aromatic curry sauce over them. As a mandatory accompaniment, Mie Caluk is served with sautéed cabbage, boiled bean sprouts, crushed red crackers, and spicy pickled shallots with bird's eye chilies.
The uniqueness of Mie Caluk lies in the use of dried noodle sticks boiled to natural chewiness without preservatives. The spicy-sweet profile of the peanut sauce combined with the savory notes of the curry creates a wonderful umami sensation. Serving it on a banana leaf adds a natural fragrant aroma that solidifies its status as a local comfort food in the afternoon.
