Peusijuek (literally meaning 'to cool down') is a sacred traditional rite of purification, blessing, and thanksgiving that plays a central role in the socio-cultural life of the Acehnese people. This ritual harmoniously integrates Islamic monotheism (tawhid) with local traditions, performed at almost every critical transition in life, such as weddings, births, departures for Hajj, the construction of new buildings, or even the purchase of a new vehicle.
The Peusijuek ritual has various typologies tailored to its social context. Among the most prominent is Peusijuek Meulangga, practiced as an instrument for social conflict resolution and customary reconciliation after disputes to cool down tensions between parties. There is also Peusijuek Padee Bijeh in the agricultural cycle to pray for seed fertility before planting, and Peusijuek Peudong Rumoh Baro when laying the foundation of a new home. Additionally, peusijuek is frequently utilized as a psychological trauma healing method to help communities recover after natural disasters or difficult periods.
The ceremony is led by traditional religious authority figures: a Teungku (cleric) for men, or an Ummi (female elder) for women. During the procession, the ritual leader mixes and sprinkles specific ingredients rich in philosophical meaning. These include breuh padee (paddy rice) symbolizing prosperity and abundance; bu leukat & tumpoe (sweet yellow glutinous rice and tumpoe cakes) representing brotherhood and close community bonds; and teupong taweu (fresh flour mixed with water) symbolizing spiritual purification and the neutralization of tension. The sprinkling is done using a bundle of selected leaves, including oun sineujuek (cooling leaf), on anekmano (life leaf), and on rumput naleung samboo (sambau grass) with strong roots, representing resilience of the soul, coolness of the heart, and endurance through life's trials.
