Didong Gayo is a traditional folk art of the Gayo people that blends oral literature in the form of social-religious poetry, melodic chanting (*didong*), and dynamic hand-clapping and pillow-tapping (*ceplok*). Originating from the Gayo Highlands—which include Central Aceh, Bener Meriah, and Gayo Lues regencies—Didong serves as an intellectual forum for the Gayo community to exchange thoughts, express social critique intelligently, and preserve ancestral traditions.
A Didong performance is executed in a circle by dozens of men divided into two opposing groups. Each group is led by a master poet known as a *Ceh*. The performance resembles a modern poetry battle, where groups exchange riddles, comment on current social issues, or counter the opposing group's critiques using classical Gayo poetry. While the *Ceh* chants, the rest of the group provides a rhythmic backing of hand-clapping and tapping on small cushions.
Didong is typically performed all night long during traditional wedding ceremonies, independence day celebrations, or regional art festivals. The art form reflects linguistic intelligence, social awareness, tolerance, and the Gayo spirit of consensus in resolving daily life issues.
