Rapai Geleng is a traditional performing art that combines the beauty of tambourine percussion (*Rapai*), dynamic swaying movements, and the chanting of Islamic prayers (*salawat*) and religious zikir. This performance art first emerged and developed on the southwestern coast of Aceh, particularly in Southwest Aceh Regency (Abdya). Rapai Geleng was originally created by an Islamic scholar as an alternative medium for spreading Islamic teachings, designed to capture the interest of young people and introduce them to moral values.
A Rapai Geleng performance is executed by a tight row of 11 to 12 male dancers, each holding a medium-sized frame drum (*Rapai*). The performance progresses through three main phases: a slow phase for safety prayers, a moderate phase chanting praises to the Prophet, and a super-fast phase serving as the climax. During the fast phase, the dancers beat their drums in rapid synchronization while shaking (*geleng*) their heads left and right in a highly dramatic display of movement.
The highlight of Rapai Geleng lies in the absolute unity and precision of the head and shoulder movements moving in perfect synchronization with the accelerating tempo of the drums. This art form symbolizes unity, collective cooperation, high discipline, and the strength of faith in Acehnese society.
