The province of Aceh is often perceived by outsiders as a culturally homogeneous region. However, from an anthropological perspective, this special autonomous territory is a rich mosaic of ethnic diversity, home to at least ten indigenous ethnic groups who have distinct local languages, customs, social structures, and cultural identities, living side by side in harmony.
The largest is the Aceh tribe, who inhabit the northern, eastern, and parts of the western-southern coasts, speaking the Acehnese language. In the mountainous interior of the Bukit Barisan range live the Gayo tribe (in Central Aceh, Bener Meriah, Gayo Lues) and the Alas tribe (in Southeast Aceh), possessing unique highland agrarian cultures with related languages, distinct dialects, and world-renowned performing arts such as the Saman and Didong dances.
Moving along other coastal regions, we find the Tamiang tribe on the northeast border with their Malay Tamiang language and culture; the Kluet tribe in the valleys of South Aceh; and the Singkil tribe on the southeast border, who speak their own unique language. On the outer islands, such as Simeulue Island, isolated yet beautifully preserved ethnic groups live, including the Devayan, Sigulai, Haloban, and Lekon tribes, each speaking entirely different local languages. This diversity of tribes in Aceh is bound together by shared historical struggles and Islamic values that form the collective foundation of society in the Veranda of Mecca.
