Peumulia Jamee: The Time-Honored Tradition of Honoring Guests

Peusijuek is a sacred and universal traditional ceremony in Acehnese culture aimed at invoking safety, peace, blessings, and harmony during various life transition moments. Literally, the word "Peusijuek" originates from the Acehnese word *sijuek*, meaning to cool down or soothe. This ceremony is performed to inaugurate a good intention or restore inner peace after significant events, such as moving into a new house, starting a business, sending off Hajj pilgrims, reconciling after a conflict, weddings, and celebrating child birth.

The Peusijuek procession is led by respected customary or religious figures, such as a *Tengku* (male religious leader) or *Ummi* (female leader). The ceremonial items are unique and carry deep philosophical symbols: water mixed with flowers represents purity, yellow-hued rice (*breuh pade*) represents prosperity, and special resilient leaves like *on seunijuek* represent strength of spirit in facing life's challenges. The leader sprinkles water using the bundle of leaves, scatters the grains, and finishes with a safety prayer.

Peusijuek reflects a harmonious assimilation between pre-Islamic customs and the Islamic monotheistic values embraced by the Acehnese. This tradition continues to be preserved as a family bond reinforcer, a tool for social reconciliation, and a spiritual expression of gratitude for all of God's blessings.
